Virtual Heroes Brings Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TC3) to Squad Overmatch

Virtual Heroes is bringing Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TC3) to the Squad Overmatch study, named the Army Modeling and Simulation Office’s #1 Team Training program of 2014. The goal of Squad Overmatch is to make military training more realistic and effective: analyzing squad live training methodologies to improve human performance and resilience. The study’s need is clear:

In conventional forces, 24 percent of wounded warfighters die of potentially survivable wounds, but the 75th Ranger Regiment [where every Ranger is a trained Combat Life Saver (CLS)] loses just 3 percent of its warfighters. The highly collaborative Squad Overmatch seeks to close the gap. [Source]

For Squad Overmatch, Virtual Heroes is making software enhancements to handheld devices used in live training exercises. These improvements enable Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TC3) in live training exercises for the first time. Now, soldiers can practice decision-making skills associated with “when to treat” and “when to fight” on an active battlefield. At the 2015 I/ITSEC conference, Virtual Heroes demonstrated our Electronic Casualty Card (ECC) Android app. The app communicates with a standard MILES vest to determine when a squad member is hit. When a hit is detected, the app assigns injuries based on the munition used and the body part that was hit. The new app replaces the random injury assignment of paper MILES casualty cards. In addition to the display of injury information, the app also enables either self-care or buddy aide treatment using an instrumented combat tourniquet, chest decompression needle, or nasal pharyngeal airway. Using our new app in live training exercises enables soldiers to experience the stress of care under fire and tactical field care without the danger of real injury.

See our portfolio for more about how Virtual Heroes is improving live training and other military training applications.

The Squad Overmatch study is featured in the August 17 edition of Military Training International.
